On Thursday, the 20th of December, at 5 PM the Mother of God arrived in Gijon in Asturia region. The town is located on the Biscay Bay, so on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. In this way Our Lady in Her pilgrimage in defence of life has already reached the second ocean, though the first stage of Her journey is not finished yet. She stopped in the Basilica of the Most Prescious Hear of Jesus, popularly called here “Iglesiona” (a big temple). Father D. Alvaro, the rector of the Basilica, did his best to make the visit appropriately solemn for the Immaculate Lady, particularly in Asturia, where Christians began their fight to expel the Moors from the Iberian Penninsula – the reconquista, which lasted from the 8th till the 15th century. Many people came to welcome the Mother of God. The Icon was carried into the basilica by the representatives of the unemployed, who are forced to beg for support in front of the church as they have lost all means of getting an income.
On December 22 at 4.15 P.M. His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Cyril, wrote a letter to the representative of the Conference of the Polish Catholic Church Episcopate, Józef Michalik, in relation to the the recent blasphemous act against the Icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa.
His Excellency Archbishop Józef Michalik, the Metropolitan Bishop of Przemyśl, the Chairman of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate
Your Reverence!
With pain in my heart have I have learnedabout the blasphemous act done against the Icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa, which resides in Jasna Góra and is sacred for the Polish nation. We thank God, that the Icon itself, which has been cherished for centuries by both Catholic and Orthodox Christians, has not been damaged.
The “Life-Mobile” with the Icon took the road to Torrelavega, an industrial city to the southwest, and there drove round the streets on the way to the Discalced Carmelite Convent of San Luis y San Fernando (St. Louis and St. Ferdinand).
On its return to Santander, the “Life-Mobile”, with flags flying in spite of rain, drove around the streets so that people could see the Icon before it was taken to La Anunciación. Also popularly known among the townspeople as “La Compañía” (church of the Society of Jesus), La Anunciación is a magnificent 16th-century Renaissance church not far from the Cathedral.
The Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa arrived at Torreánaz School at about 10 p.m., and was greeted with a candle-lit procession formed by boarding pupils and the Community of the Hijas de Santa María del Corazón de Jesús (Daughters of Saint Mary of the Heart of Jesus). It was a joyous occasion. The Icon was escorted to the chapel, where members of the community took turns in an all-night vigil.
